    Pilkope Villa Reconstruction

    EUmies Awards 2026

    Nominees

    LG projektai

Gintautas Vieversys · Gina Vieversytė · Loreta Volungevičienė

Villa “Pilkopė” was built in 1978, based on a design by the well-known architect A. Zaviša. It is one of the most significant examples of modernist architecture, located in the beautiful Curonian Spit National Park in Lithuania. The reconstruction took two years, during which the building was dismantled and rebuilt from the ground up, expanded and elevated to create larger, more comfortable apartments for recreation. The structure was enriched with contemporary modern details, such as a glass volume housing a viewing platform and an evacuation staircase, where a restored stained-glass artwork was installed in the roof plane. The sharp tip of the glass structure emphasizes the silhouette of modernist architecture. Great attention was given to landscaping and artistic accents. The landscaping design features plants typical of the Curonian Spit, such as sedges and mountain pines. At ground level, the soil was excavated to form an inner courtyard— a space designed for leisure and fostering community connections. The building has been brought back to life, bringing joy to local residents and the architectural community alike

    Patrick Siebenaler

Two house types were developed: one with a garden that spans the width of the plot
along the main façade, and another with an entrance patio and a diagonally opposite rear
garden. Both share the same core elements – a compact main volume, an outbuilding for
garden tools and bicycles, and a 15 meter-long wooden palisade that provides a sense
of privacy. These modules are arranged and rotated according to two principles: the
main volume opens onto the public square to foster a sense of urban density, while the
gardens are oriented toward the south and west for optimal sunlight. The result is a
network of introverted green pockets – private yet visually linked – creating a continuous
inner landscape defined by hedges and fruit trees unique to each plot.

    Dar Tereża

    EUmies Awards 2026

    Nominees

    Local Office for Architecture

Dr. Alexia Mercieca · Alex Spiteri

Dar Tereża is a community-based residential project in Bormla, Malta, designed by LOCAL OFFICE for Architecture for the Richmond Foundation. Conceived to support women experiencing mental health challenges and their children, the project transforms two early 19th-century townhouses into a safe, inclusive, and restorative environment. Through adaptive reuse, the design preserves the layered character of Bormla’s heritage while introducing new spatial possibilities that foster care, autonomy, and community integration.
Developed through a participatory process with future residents, care professionals, and local authorities, the project redefines domestic architecture as a catalyst for recovery and empowerment. The resulting environment avoids institutional typologies in favour of a home-like setting that supports independence and dignity. Its spatial organisation balances communal interaction and personal retreat, while the use of natural light, ventilation, and material texture enhances environmental and emotional comfort.
Dar Tereża exemplifies trauma-informed design and social inclusion through architecture. Achieved under significant budgetary and time constraints, the project demonstrates how modest interventions can deliver transformative social value. It offers a replicable model for community-based care embedded within Malta’s urban and cultural fabric, and a demonstration of how adaptive reuse can sustain both heritage and human wellbeing.

The design concept was to integrate the planned quarter into the urban fabric, incorporating historic buildings into the structure of the block and subtly defining the boundaries between public and semi-private zones. From an urban planning perspective, the development does not isolate itself from the city; instead, it leverages the existing potential by creating a series of public spaces at the intersection. This effect was achieved through oversized entrance gateways – the “Ajnfarts” – which serve not only as access points to the apartments but also as passages to a publicly accessible green courtyard, activating the area with a range of service and recreational functions.
