The project was originated in Miedzianka, a town that had sunk underground. After WWII, uranium was plundered there to construct an atomic bomb. Beneath emerged a chaotic network of tunnels. Mining shafts sprouted up in between residential buildings. The project draws on this history, brings the community together, and offers artistic activities.

Sinking the new sports and event hall for the Saint Margaret High School was a rational decision both in regards of space and environment. The considerable size of the hall is reduced by more than half, so the surroundings are less disturbed, while the rooftop is an additional field for the school.

We were given the task to design a comfortable, functional, and safe place for a school of 500 children of all age groups. The designed building shares its territory with a decommissioned soviet factory “Poliron”, and the use of building materials such as brick veneer on the first stories of the designed building reminds us of the building’s context.

The old church of Ylivieska tragically burned down in 2016. K2S won the open competition for the new church in 2017. The new church of Ylivieska forms a landmark and is divided into three parts – the church hall, the vestry, and the lobby. The entrance is beveled diagonally, forming an entry plaza together with the war graves and the ruins of the old church.

The project includes the construction of a new school building, on the site of the old one, as well as the energy rehabilitation of the existing entrance area and the school gym. The main goal of this project was to renew the old school so that it meets modern needs, in terms of functionality, aesthetics and energy efficiency.

Pavilion Z has been sensitively restored with respect for the original structure, which is well known to all locals. With the motto “evolution, not destruction”, environmental and financial costs were saved. The project is a small-scaled that has an important social dimension. Evisa is a village made out of stone. It’s composed by solid, monolithic buildings bearing simple volumes, surrounded by chestnut and Laricio pine woods (endemic).The porch sits at the back of the yard and is an analogy to a secular oversized chestnut tree, bearing an imposing foliage.
