The Metropol Theater is an original work by Josep Maria Jujol Gibert conceived as “a ship that led the spectators towards the sea of salvation”. Limited by a space that did not give him architectural freedom, Jujol concentrated on the decorative details that revolve around the idea of the ship. The theatre has been renovated.

The museum’s quiet spaces are designed to accommodate works of art in changing presentations. Gabled roofs of different heights provide the illumination for the exhibition spaces while also defining the zig-zag shape of the building. The façade and roofs are clad with large sandblasted sheets of stainless steel, interpreting the traditional wood-shingled Appenzell architecture.

Due to the poor condition of this 60 year old church and due to the extreme decline in attendance at church services, a complete demolition and the new construction of a small “prayer room” as a replacement were under discussion.
