The otherwise regular scheme of the University of Alacant’s new campus becomes problematic along the highway that skirts it. Placing the University Museum on a parcel bordered by the thoroughfare, between the Business School and a peripheral parking lot, determined the built solution to the problem.

The centre has a series of facilities: workshop rooms, training rooms, booths and music rooms, two gyms, an assembly hall for 270 people, and a cafeteria. All of them are distributed in a T-shape building, extended to the outside in three patios that serve as a reception space, extension of the patios and as an outdoor gym area.

The extension of the Kunstmuseum Winterthur was realised in the form of a low cost structure. Nine spaces with zenithal daylight allow to house temporary exhibitions, as well as to present the collection. The restrained, calm rooms are subtly differentiated by no more than proportions, changing door-openings and windows.

The project began as the need for a retaining wall for a street –José Ramón Mélida– endangered by the work of the archaeologists, who had excavated an entire block and found what they expected: aqueducts, peristyles of Roman houses, foundations of Renaissance patios, cisterns, drainage channels and even the remains of a Paleo-Christian church.

The museum is located at the seaside village of Ayia Napa on the island of Cyprus.
It is the result of a national competition (1st prize) that took place in 1997. The project itself was realized in the period between 2000-2003 and was completed in November 2003. It is a collaboration of the Municipality of Ayia Napa and the Pierides Foundation.
