The hotel was built in 1968 as the “Youth Hotel Sport” (designed by S. Jelinek, interiors by B. Bernardi). Over time, the hotel has undergone multiple expansions and degradations. Strategically positioned in the eastern part of the city, at the vibrant 'Square of Events,' Zonar Zagreb caters to a younger, dynamic population, becoming an extension of the square - an infrastructural support for the city’s public life. The ground floor and mezzanine of the hotel exude a super public character. The tower offers guests a diverse range of accommodations, while its rooftop pool invites you to swim among the clouds.
1968: The Hotel was born as the “Youth Hotel Sport.” The original design was crafted by Jelinek, while the interior was brought to life by Bernardi. Over the years, the hotel has undergone several expansions. 2023: Zonar Zagreb stands proudly at a strategic position in the city, on the 'Square of Events,' catering to a vibrant, youthful population. It has transformed into a lively hub, an extension of the square, providing infrastructural support for public life. The ground floor and mezzanine of the hotel exude a super public character. The ground level features an exciting blend of bars, restaurants, and co-working spaces, while the mezzanine showcases a series of modules designed for various types of events. The accommodation units offer a diverse palette of experiences. From bright to dark rooms, wooden to metal pavilions, zen rooms, and rooms equipped with sports gear… After 50 years, the tower’s roof is finally activated according to its visionary concept, now transformed into an observation deck, accessible via a new panoramic elevator. The rooftop is a lush landscape of a bar and sunbathing area. Now, all citizens can bask in the clouds!
1968-2019: Over time, the hotel has undergone multiple expansions. 2023: The post-lockdown and post-earthquake atmosphere envelops the construction site, even though all strategic decisions were defined in 2019. A strip-tease operation has been executed on the complex; all elements, except for the load-bearing structure and the glass facade from 2000, have been stripped away. The interventions are clear and legible. A minimal garden is vibrant and intense. All communication pathways have been inverted. A distinct southern dilation has been introduced, complete with a veranda on the ground floor and a spacious terrace above. The room modules start off minimal, seamlessly integrating pavilions - wooden, metallic, and felted. Linear pathways transform into loops, fostering a dynamic flow. We’ve introduced a panoramic elevator. The roof emerges as a focal point in the city, featuring a swimming pool. The materials present a striking contrast to the shell - reflective, soft, mirrored, and mesh-like. A kaleidoscopic metropolitan world has been created on the edge of the city.
