The underutilization of industrial heritage and the inaccessibility of museum collections are two pressing architectural and cultural challenges. X-DEPOT addresses both by repurposing the former Olivetti factory in Marcianise into an innovative museum storage facility. This project redefines the role of museum deposits, shifting from passive storage to an active space for conservation, exhibition, and research. It merges industrial reuse with contemporary museological strategies, transforming hidden heritage into a dynamic cultural resource for the public.
X-DEPOT is a transformative architectural intervention that reuses the former Olivetti factory in Marcianise as an innovative museum storage facility. Addressing the inefficiencies of traditional museum deposits, it shifts storage from a passive function to an active, multifunctional space that integrates conservation, exhibition, research, and public engagement. The project introduces a flexible storage model where collections are not only preserved but also regularly exhibited through rotating displays. Spaces for restoration, study, and cultural programming ensure that stored artefacts remain accessible and relevant, fostering interaction between professionals, researchers, and the public. The architectural intervention respects and enhances the factory’s existing structure, preserving its industrial identity while adapting it to contemporary museological needs. Large open spaces allow for adaptable layouts, ensuring functionality while maintaining the spatial and material integrity of the original design. Beyond its architectural value, X-DEPOT promotes a new typology of museum storage, capable of housing collections from multiple institutions, optimizing resources, and ensuring broader public access to hidden cultural heritage. Through the synergy of industrial reuse and museological innovation, the project revitalizes one of Italy’s most significant 20th-century factories, transforming it into a living cultural infrastructure that bridges heritage conservation with contemporary accessibility.
