Located in a secluded area on the southern part of Syros, Residence Viglostasi embodies the charm of small Aegean villages. The complex, which spans 500 sq.m., features a main residence along with two guest houses, all designed with low, orthogonal volumes organized around terraces and patios. Built using local stone, marble, wood, and bamboo, this residence integrates harmoniously with the steep terrain, offering uninterrupted sea views and fostering a seamless connection between the interior and exterior spaces.
The concept is inspired by traditional Cycladic architecture, which features simple, monolithic forms that blend seamlessly into the rocky landscape. The client, a family of four who has a deep passion for the Greek sea, envisioned a home that captures the essence of the villages on Syros, with their squares and narrow alleys. Block722 approached the design by treating the ground as an active element, fragmenting the volumes to follow the natural slope of the land and connecting all spaces through paths, gardens, and plazas. The layout centers around an outdoor plaza that leads to an infinity pool, uniting the living and guest areas while providing privacy and uninterrupted views of the horizon. The design aims to find a balance between modesty and gentle luxury, incorporating authentic materials, local craftsmanship, and a minimal aesthetic to create a sense of calmness, intimacy, and connection with nature.
Natural local stone, including Olympus marble and travertine, along with oak and bamboo, define the structure and finishes of this building, blending authenticity with durability. Biomaterials are used both structurally and decoratively, reflecting the studio’s commitment to sustainability. The house features eco-friendly materials, native planting, and a green roof to seamlessly merge with the environment and minimize its impact. The interiors follow the same philosophy, showcasing neutral tones, terrazzo Palladiano floors, plastered surfaces, and traditional shutters that enhance natural light and ventilation. Local artisans processed and installed the stone, ensuring timeless quality and low maintenance. The design incorporates natural shading and cross ventilation, along with durable finishes, to minimize energy consumption and upkeep costs, promoting long-term sustainability and harmony with the landscape.
