Task Setting for the Bachelor Design The task was to fit a specific programme into the shed hall 'Schappe' in Reussbühl, Lucerne. A new spatial programme had to be developed for the conversion of the hall, including public and private programmes. The shed roof and the street façade had to be treated very cautious, as they are listed.
In my opinion it is essential to create density not only by the volume of a building, but also by dual usage of programmes. The steel structure very much impressed me after visiting the hall and I wanted to lift it out. I placed all the walls next to the structure, so it is always visible. The steel structure gets two new visual functions. First: Building space such as the two lengthwise corridors. Second: In front of a wall, especially in the living rooms of the apartments, the structure becomes a sort of a sculpture. Another thing I found important for the character of the hall, were the roof windows. I reused them as a part of the inner facade. \nIn my opinion the task setting included three main uses: Meeting, Living and Working. Atmospheric and spatial I wanted to differ the three. In the middle layer the themes become piazzas, 'Reussbühlplatz, Markt + Veranstaltung und Werkhof'. Apartments are located and accessed from the southwest façade. On that side I only let stand the old transformer station, remaining of a church. The other old extensions I replaced. To balance the volume of the transformer station I used the volume of the bibliotheca as adjustment.\nThe 'Reussbühlplatz' becomes the new meeting point in the quarter. A spacious opening in the southeast façade expands the piazza into the inside. The space between the neighbour house and the new bistro is equipped with tables and chairs, without compulsion to buy, freely after the motto, 'bring your own'.\nMarket and Event are in the middle of the hall. Different kind of markets take place in the middle, while the shops surrounding the place are fix. If there is an event, the corridors will be closed and the middle piazza can now be accessed by the middle cross-corridor. Those includes all the side rooms. \nLive-in studios and workshops surround the third place, 'Werkhof'. The space in the middle can be used from the wood workshop, to assemble large pieces and/or as a expansion for the studios. In the Live-in studios the kitchen is a dual used space, for the studio and the living.
