During the design process, I chose a small corner in my hometown and imagined a theatre education space. Drama education thrives on learning through doing, so I designed a cultural complex that serves as both a studio theatre and an educational space. By integrating a contemporary building into the Baroque cityscape, I explored architectural elements from the era. The result is a tower-like building with a central stage, suitable for indoor and outdoor performances and actively contributing to the cultural life of the city.
I was looking for a location close to me for my diploma project, so I chose my hometown. I found a small corner plot of land on the edge of a closed block, but strongly detached from it. I envisioned a function for the area that would have some relevance. So I started to work on education, and within that, theatre education. The essence of drama education is learning through dramatic action. I wanted to give a home to this unconventional way of teaching. The result is a complex cultural building that can be used for educational purposes, but also as a studio theatre. The other idea I had was how to put a contemporary building in a baroque city centre. I started to look at the tools that baroque architecture used and tried to use or adapt as much as possible to today's needs. From the beginning I imagined some kind of tower-like building for the site. The stage and the auditorium are in the centre, and they are on the ground floor. The guests arrive on the elevated ground floor from the square and the auditorium can be approached from there. A gallery on the first floor separating the theatre and educational functions. Above the gallery are the activity rooms. My aim was to create an institution that could actively contribute to the cultural life of the city. By opening up to the square, the building can also be used as an indoor-outdoor stage, hosting summer events and becoming an integral part of the city centre. The house could be interpreted as a big circus tent. The wooden structure is the staging of the tent and the tarpaulin is the outer shell of the building. Thanks to the wooden structure, an interior spatial world has been created that evokes the mystery of the attic spaces. Overall, the structure wears its shell like an actor wearing his mask.
