The proposal for the Theatre Academy in Berlin, based on a profound analytical reading of the morphological structure of the city, complements the spatial and cultural densification of Museum Island. The result represents the metamorphosis of the territory by revealing the historic dimension of Berlin - composed of many superimposed layers.
The development of the architectural project involves the hierarchical sequence of themes, form, and construction. The morphological themes: Superimposition, Rotation, and Spatial Sequence require the specific form that articulates the construction.\nBy analytical reading of existing topographic categories, the necessity of the primary form has emerged. The cartographic investigation of the medieval Berlin revealed organic morphology. Contrary, the post-war reconstruction of the fragmented city sculpted alien urban forms. By superimposition of these grids the project provokes the historical dimension of the place.\nThe urban garden is further articulated by the piazza and amphitheater spaces that define the entrance of the primary form. The space of the urban garden is extended into the urban loggia through the ramp, that is the initiator of transformation through the rotation of coral volume.\nThe spatial sequence started from Tiergarten arriving at the urban piazza, continued by the ramp and urban loggia reaches to the foyer. The lobby is articulated by natural light that brings the spectator to the lateral staircases, through which the auditorium level is reached.\nThe Auditorium introduces the complex articulation of spaces by following the idea of incorporation and layering system. The view of the stage is articulated by the scene installation that takes reference from A.Palladio’s Teatro Olimpico by the architectonical distribution of frames that are expressively strengthening the perspective sense of the view that establishes the visual connection to the city.\nThe journey is continued by the four balcony levels and different programmatic spaces. The spatial sequence is summarized at the terrace that provides the panoramic view of the city structure.\nAll the mentioned morphological themes and the formal strategies are used as tools to make a specific interpretation of the design territory. The result establishes the metamorphosis of the place, which introduces the historic dimension of territory superimposed and confronted with the existing morphology of Berlin.
