The Trefferia

On the one hand Berlin stands out through its anonymity and contrasts, on the other hand it is alive with creativity and brings together all kinds of people. That’s why it’s important to create places, so that all these differences from all walks of life can easily be brought together. And what is it that brings each and every one of us together? Food (And drink)

In the first chapters, the concepts of community, food culture and picnic are theoretically investigated contributing to find answer to what characterizes them and what do they have to fulfill. This is followed by an artistic approach to the subject. It is raised how are common meals presented in art and if there are atmospheric differences between the consumption of food outside and in the interior? Following this theoretical approach, the second part presents the property on which the neighborhood meeting point, the Trefferia, will be planned. \nThe Trefferia is located in Berlin, on the roof of a single story underground carpark in a residential area of Kreuzberg, on the border of the central area. The area stands out due to its social differences: the middle class as well as the lower class. Because of the social and cultural distinctions, and an already existing segregation it is important to find a way to bring the neighborhood together. On the roof already exist raised flower beds and all neighbors have a good view to this property but so far nobody uses and takes care of it even though it has potential to spend time at. That is why I complement the roof with five different pavilions and design the landscape in order to create the first Trefferia where one can spend time at, cook, bake and eat together.
