UNESCO Creative City of Film: La Unión (Región de Murcia) as a hypothetical case.

The mining industry in the Murcia region, not only left a serious environmental damage in its surroundings. It also left a big industrial complex, now in ruins, historically known as ‘La Maquinista de Levante’, which could become the cornerstone for the sustainable territory regeneration.

To achieve this goal, I conceived this work as an experimental space that would allow me to project a pilot case for a UNESCO Creative City: a city of film. A city in which the three pillars of sustainable development: social, economic, and environmental, could be integrated both into the urban planning and the architectural project Itself. The Proposal suggests repurposing this abandoned industrial complex by introducing the programmatic use of a Film School and Cultural Center. This center will be sustained by the growing Film Comission of the Region of Murcia.

This center Is projected as the backbone for creating a new creative and cultural city grounded in the orange -also called- creative economy, and in contrast with the legacy of the inherited mining economy endured by the surrounding territory. This architectural intervention not only works within the previous industrial buildings by revitalizing them. In parallel, it projects a new volume that connects all the structures, reducing the industrial scale to a human-centric design, multi-sensory, and much more respectful of the environment. In conclusion, this project would transform what one day was an deteriorated mining environment into the engine of one of the most sustainable economy models: the creative economy.
