Centrally located in the Tammela district of Tampere, Finland, Tammela Stadium combines a UEFA-standard stadium with five residential buildings (256 apartments), a commercial centre and parking across eight city plots (47,753 m² total; stadium 13,436 m² excl. pitch). Arched steel canopies, glazed end walls and pale brick façades integrate with the city’s dense urban grid, revitalising the historic area as an active community hub. Tammela Stadium is a cultural and social space that integrates public and private functions into the urban fabric, reinforcing its coherence.
Fitting a UEFA Category 4 stadium into a dense residential context while sustaining daily city life was the core challenge. The project stems from JKMM’s winning 2014 architectural competition entry, Hattutemppu (“Hat Trick”), which layers sport, housing and commerce into one cohesive hybrid block – turning constraints into opportunity. The stadium serves residents’ recreation and top-level football with 8,000 seats and up to 15,000 for events. Every seat offers an unobstructed view of the field. The City of Tampere sought to maximise land use and fund the public venue through mixed use. The design favours integration over isolation: stadium entrances at the corners, residential ones along the streets – clear separation with urban continuity. Acoustic and spatial strategies secure calm homes alongside 100+ matches and 300 events yearly. The result is a “miniature city” that strengthens Tampere’s urban vitality.
The structure combines cast-in-place concrete, prefabricated elements and steel canopies spanning over 100 m. The asymmetrical roof uses cable suspension on the east and columns on the west, optimising structure, materials and cost. Glazed end walls bring light and transparency while containing noise, and a 50 mm structural gap ensures acoustic isolation between the stadium and housing. Pale brick façades reference Tampere’s tradition, while the light-coloured roof reflects heat and filters air pollutants. The stadium’s central location relies on existing infrastructure and is easily accessible by public transport. The block connects to district heating and cooling networks, reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency. Durable, low-maintenance materials and optimised structures ensure long-term sustainability and resilience.
