Subterranean Oasis

The concept was developed through a comprehensive examination of the terrain geomorphology in Eastern Serbia, with a particular focus on the dynamic natural transformations over time. The central idea was to integrate a new type of spa experience within Lazar's Cave, a prominent speleological site near Zlot, located in eastern Serbia. This site is part of a rich cluster of caves, each with unique geological characteristics. By following the principles of speleology, the project aims to offer a fresh perspective on the intersection of architecture and nature, within the context of spa design.

Speleology, as a scientific discipline, serves as the primary framework for conceptualizing the space of Lazar’s Cave in Eastern Serbia, facilitating a deeper understanding of the cave's formations—stalactites, stalagmites, and other speleological features—while considering their therapeutic and health-promoting benefits. Characteristics of these underground environments, such as stable temperatures, high humidity, and mineral-rich air, are well-documented for their positive effects on respiratory and overall health. These natural properties inform the creation of a novel architectural approach that respects and enhances the cave's ecosystem. The design introduces new spatial elements, which are carefully integrated into the existing cave structure without disrupting its delicate ecological balance. These elements function as contemporary 'beaches' within the cave. Since this cave consists of multiple levels - These additions are intended to merge seamlessly with the cave’s natural conditions, ensuring that the intervention complements rather than competes with the geological and ecological integrity of the site. Salt rooms, thermal pools, saunas and other additions strategically follow the natural underground streams and cave walls. All walking paths within the cave are also designed to follow the natural contours of the terrain, integrating viewing platforms and resting spots that allow visitors to fully appreciate the interplay of light, shadow, and form within the space. By fostering a dialogue between the natural world and architectural design, this project embodies a forward-thinking approach to wellness that is both environmentally responsible and deeply attuned to the healing properties of nature.
