Our society is constantly changing. Therefore, we need flexible architecture that meets evolving social, functional and spatial needs. Especially in urban areas, buildings frequently change users and must be able to withstand the transformation of urban life. However, it is impossible to predict how the demands on architecture will change, so what do we need to consider when designing buildings that not only meet the needs of today, but are also resilient to the unpredictable developments in our society?
On the one hand, the structure is to be understood as a supporting structure in the architectural sense. This is one of the most important elements for creating the identity and character of the building. If people understand the structure when experiencing the building and the materiality is visible, a relationship with the building can be developed, which makes it more likely to be cared for, developed and loved. The emotional sustainability factor can therefore help to preserve the building for a long time. But also is structure understood as the spacial organization. The design is an adaptive system, which is multipliable and expandable and can therefore be applied to a variety of sites. The system is based on a grid with a clear structure, hierarchy and order, but which offers a wide range of possibilities thanks to its variable formulation. The issue of social relationships and social structure should not be underestimated in the design. This is often still treated too rigidly in the development of buildings. Traditional buildings and apartments have long since ceased to meet changing needs, for example when it comes to evolved family structures or the aspect of community. Constantly questioning our social structures and hierarchies is an important factor in developing them further. Society is in a state of permanent change, which is certainly a positive development. This must also be reflected in architecture. The structure can provide a stable framework for changes in use and creates space for changes in society. Changing needs, on the other hand, communicate with the structure and set the parameters that define it.
