Gabès, once a natural haven, is now at a critical juncture due to industrialization, which threatens its unique oasis ecosystem and local economy. The oasis, a last refuge against urban pollution, faces illegal transformations and environmental degradation. As industrial activities decline, the question arises: How can Gabès reconcile ecological preservation with economic sustainability? This project explores the potential of ecotourism and cultural engagement as a resilient alternative, ensuring a harmonious future for the city and its inhabitants.

Inspired by the resilience and form of the palm tree, our project envisions the oasis of Gabès as a model for urban regeneration, blending nature, culture, and community-driven sustainability. In response to environmental degradation and the fragmentation of the oasis, this project strengthens ecological preservation while promoting economic and social revitalization. The architectural and spatial design draws from the palm tree’s structure. Its trunk symbolizes the central gathering space, a hub for markets, workshops, and cultural events. The fronds extend outward as pathways and shaded areas, reconnecting the oasis and offering panoramic views of its unique ecosystem. A key aspect of the project is integrating agricultural activities, encouraging participation in oasis cultivation. A self-service farming concept allows both locals and visitors to engage in sustainable agriculture through shared planters, a greenhouse, and a pomegranate garden. An open kitchen near the market enhances the experience, allowing visitors to cook with fresh, local produce. The project revitalizes the urban-rural connection by reintroducing public spaces, an open market, and ecological trails showcasing traditional oasis practices. Shaded walkways, inspired by the palm tree’s canopy, create spaces for rest and contemplation, reinforcing harmony between architecture and nature. The main structure incorporates ecological materials such as rocks, wood, and palm leaves. Designed as a living structure inspired by the palm tree, it interacts with the environment by expelling hot air. To add palm cane panels filter the air, transforming it into a cooler, more comfortable breeze.
