The area developed independently with a focus on the Tram Depot, which has long been unused and decaying despite its great potential for a public building. After analyzing the situation, it was decided to develop the depot for use as an, urban baths facility with an indoor pool. Adopting a sensitive approach to the original building, with consideration for continuity, a wooden truss construction was chosen for the new pool building. Part of the project also includes the creation of a new public square in front of the pool building.
Location This thesis focuses on central Košíře, Prague, between Vrchlického and Plzeňská streets. The project aims to transform the former tram depot, now used by the Secondary School of Transport, and its surroundings. The plan involves demolishing an annex and building a new three-nave structure connecting the depot to Plzeňská Street. A partially covered piazzetta will link Plzeňská and Vrchlického streets, enhancing public space and accessibility. Public Baths The new facility will address Prague’s shortage of public pools, designed as a "temple of water" rather than a sports center. Centrally located and accessible by public transport and car, it will include underground garages with 55 parking spaces, including five for disabled users. Former Depot Building While not a cultural monument, the depot’s historical value will be respected. The original structure will be preserved, with recent annexes removed. New autonomous structures will be inserted to maintain its character. Architecture The municipal baths will offer three levels: the depot, a new pool building, and underground parking. The piazzetta-facing main entrance leads to a reception, bistro, offices, and changing rooms. Wellness areas in the depot will feature saunas, steam rooms, and massages, preserving the original wooden trusses and skylights. New Pool Bulding A wooden truss structure will create an open pool building with relaxation areas and interconnected bridges. Structural Design The building combines reinforced concrete underground and wooden structures above. The double-skinned façade, inspired by the Laban Centre, features polycarbonate and large glass panels for aesthetics and insulation. The design transforms the depot into a functional, modern public space for Prague residents.
