As a result of the settlement of large commercial structures in the margins, a shift of the municipal centrality, from the market square to the bypass road, was accompanied. The daily shopping, the meeting of friends, even the outgoing in the evening, shifts to parking areas, which are seen as a jumping board to the next event. The public space is reduced to the federal road. Driveways, parking lots, green areas, sidewalks are used exclusively for movement on the individual parcel during the opening hours, not for the stay or even communication of public life. Against this background, the current situation must be critically questioned and alternative solutions should be considered: The lavish handling of the resource landscape and the construction of unsustainable building structures is compensated by a large architectural form. The model is looking for an architectural form that, as a deliberate setting in the peripheral-rural space, takes up the current tendencies and needs of the population and, as an urban development method, gives shape to the new centrality in the periphery. By over layering and condensing the peripheral consumer functions, a landmark is created, which in the landscape is a source of identity and can evolve into a cultural place by the addition of public community functions. The architectural object is designed as an open shelf. The standardized construction of the retail centers and the ubiquitous element of the parking lot form the basis for a generic floor plan. Through the consideration and analysis of social developments, selected reference projects and site-specific parameters, different design aspects are developed and written as different layers in the ground plans. The design becomes the background. A neutral coulisse. A replicator that is able to rediscover lost functions of the traditional marketplace, to reconcile itself with current trends of the consumer society and create a new center in the landscape.
