My project looks at repurposing a disused industrial grain mill for use as a collaborative workshop. I want to create a place that has the appeal to attract people and their visions and to offer them a perspective for their startup, their companies or their passion.
This master's thesis deals with the question of how to fill the Rhenania area, an industrial plant on the eastern edge of downtown Saarbrücken, with new life. The goals are to permanently prevent the decay of the plant and to preserve the buildings for the future. The facility has been abandoned for 50 years now. The plan is to revive it with a maker space that offers everyone the opportunity to work and collaborate with a network of creators. Creative people can settle here and build their businesses as part of the maker space community. They will use the network, the workshops, work rooms, shared spaces and event rooms. The location also offers a connection to the Saarbrücken art scene. Exhibition rooms are housed in the old gravel silo and studios are located in the adjacent silo. The party and club scene that has defined the site since the 1990’s is not gone. The parties are a magnet and help to make the place known. The uses of the area overlap so that the place is always used and never stands still.
