The new building arises from the desire to preserve the memory of one of the most emblematic institutions of the city, after the fire that occurred in 1994, which destroyed the entirety of the theater except for some small outbuildings: the Sala dels Miralls, the lobby on the Rambla, the entrance porches and the staircase. The new project chooses to rebuild the great hall with fidelity to the original, and adopt modern technological and compositional criteria to equip the new theater with the necessary infrastructure and services for an up-to-date operation. The new floor construction finally occupies 70% of the totality of the new building. The new gable of the roof integrates the scenic tower and the great room in a single volume, which indicates the old orientation of the theater within the lot in accordance with the utilization criteria of the original project.
