This study aims to understand the factors that lead to the successful process of revitalization, reclamation, and redevelopment of post-industrial areas. Special attention is given to respecting existing contexts. To gain this understanding, pre-design research was conducted regarding local conditions, existing contexts, and best practices related to these processes. To present the research results and conclusions, the project offers a design proposal for the development of the "Ruda" spoil heap in Zabrze-Biskupice, which is a comprehensive solution responding to the conditions of the site.
The project presents the concept for the development of the "Ruda" post-mining spoil heap in Zabrze-Biskupice, with the goal of revitalizing the area and giving it new functions based on pre-design research. The project is an attempt to create a comprehensive space in a post-industrial area that engages in dialogue with local conditions and numerous contexts. To achieve this, the project covers three main areas: a research facility with research fields, an artistic installation spanning the entire area of the spoil heap, and an educational-exhibition pavilion. The project assumes that the space will harmonize with nature. The project also involves creating a research space to analyze plant species that could be implemented in post-industrial areas. The research fields have varying conditions, which allows for expanding studies on the flora of these areas. The planned area will also serve educational purposes, creating a post-industrial plant park that could become an arboretum in the future. Another element is the artistic installation, which emphasizes the scenic value of the spoil heap and invites contemplation of the lasting changes in post-industrial areas. The view from the spoil heap is meant to encourage reflection on the permanently transformed landscape. The pavilion, designed as the central point of the entire project, will serve educational and research functions. It includes spaces for organizing exhibitions and educational events, as well as rooms for the research unit. The structure of the pavilion is divided into four sections, separated by concrete tubes that reference the artistic installation and carry symbolic meaning.
