The work derives from the observation of two current aspects concerning architecture and society: the need of reusing abandoned industrial buildings and of providing facilities for not self-sufficient people. The architectural approach aims to convert the former factory into a residential care home, in compliance with the historical value.
The factory of Moncalieri cannot be read as an "experimental building" full of innovative technical solutions building, but as a testimony of maturity reached by the rationalist structures. It is a building with great potentials: it has as a compact volume, wide and flexible spaces, and it is included within a context rich of greenery. Built in the early 50's and abandoned in 1989, the building has not hosted any new function for the last 27 years. The historical memory of the building is the basis of the concept. The conservation of the original facades of the factory, for instance, is not only an obligation but also an ethic message of good design.
