This thesis proposes the planning of an experimental art field on the island Pezonisi, located in the region of Eretria, Greece. Pesonisi is also a part of a deserted islands network on south Evoiotic Bay. The myth of the deserted island has always fascinated people’s imagination depicting the vision of an ideal world.
Pezonisi is connected with Eretria through a footbridge, which begins from Eretria’s Ancient Theater. Consequently, the case of Pezonisi presents as an ideal opportunity to enhance theatrical activities by integrating two different systems, the urban and the natural landscape. Maintaining a critical approach towards the touristic nature the island used to have, we propose the settlement and interaction of different art communities. We introduce a platform for applied experimental art, obtaining the atmosphere of a permanent festival. In our view, the theatric space includes both the network of the neighboring isles and the sea water among them. This residential program promotes the participation in the everyday life of the island, favoring community service and contribution over consumption attitude. Our main initiative is the introduction of a walk which would incorporate Pezonisi back to Eretria’s everyday life. Practically, we design a path leading up the hill. When the visitor establishes visual contact with the neighboring islands, the ground becomes a crevasse in which the walking receives multiple dimensions sparking complex creative moments. Regarding the design principles, externally we follow the primordial and doric approach of a tranquil settlement, which seems to have been on the island forever. Internally, we experiment with the flexible elements and the concept of reversible space. We urged ourselves to diverge from a partial approach towards the entirety of the system. Opening up to the space as a whole, we propose the establishment of a repetitive infrastructure. Our basic reference point has been I. Xenakis theatrical play “Polytopon”. Maintaining his approach, our conviction is that we belong to that heritage and traditions of the Greek landscape which due to its geographical idiosyncrasy allows and promotes relations of proximity. We utilize these relations, as well as the natural beauty of the place so as to compose an architectural space from raw material, sound, light, time, color, and space. Axiomatically, every individual inhabits the island he dreams of.
