Peace Pavilion (dismantled)

The Peace Pavilion is a temporary inflatable pavilion built at the heart of the Museum Gardens in London for the summer of 2013. The Pavilion is visually and aesthetically engaging. It expresses a sense of peace providing an ideal contemporary space with a sense of tranquility, beauty and exceptional aesthetic. The pavilion is a perfect and symmetrical sculpture, obtained by a precise geometrical manipulation. The beauty of the shape lies in its symmetry and fluidity. The construction is a self-supporting structure with 4m in height and 62m² in area, designed entirely with lightweight materials: PVC membrane and air. The Peace Pavilion is a temporary transportable pavilion built at the heart of the Museum Gardens in London for the summer of 2013. The gardens, of approximately 1.05 hectares in size, are on the English Heritage Register for Historic Parks and Gardens. The site is mainly used as a recreational garden for living, working and visiting communities. The pavilion aims at providing an inspirational space where people can stand and sit whilst admiring, embracing diversity and engaging with each other in discussions about design or the importance and benefits of peace and co-existence. Peace is one of the highest possible human ideals. It is a state of equilibrium; it means NO WAR, but also harmony, silence, pureness, kindness, happiness, appeasement, calm, reconciliation, serendipity, tranquility

To express all of these ideas, we have created a pavilion that is visually and aesthetically engaging, capable to provide an ideal contemporary space with a sense of tranquility and beauty. The construction is a perfect and symmetrical sculpture, obtained by a precise geometrical manipulation. The beauty of the shape lies in its perfect symmetry and fluidity, which blurs our notions of inside and outside. However, the simple act of motion through the exterior and interior spaces of the pavilion brings an understanding to the visitor.

The Pavilion is 4 meters in height and 62 Square meters in area. Designed entirely with lightweight materials & 149,1 m² of PVC membrane and 47,4m3 of air - our project is a self-supporting structure; it is easily scalable to inhabit larger dimensions of other sites. To achieve such an apparently complex shape, we unite advanced tools of parametric design. These tools are the study of tensile membranes, the geometric conception of double curved surfaces, the digital fabrication and the accurate manufacturing of the pavilion using CNC cutting machines. The pavilion construction has considered sustainability aspects, such as the use of a recycled PVC membrane. But, actually, the sustainability of the whole project lies in its temporary and ephemeral nature, which makes it a low impact architecture for the ground and the territory.
