The project aims to revitalise the Soviet apartment buildings (Panelka) in Bulgaria by reimagining the globally mass produced Panelka through its local vernacular characteristics. By careful study of latent opportunities, a cross-scale framework is developed, which corresponds spatially and socially to the needs of residents.
The project aims to reimagine Trakiya through its local vernacular characteristics, to relieve the negative perception of the mass-produced Panelka. By careful study of latent opportunities, a cross-scale framework of multiple interventions is developed to correspond spatially and socially to the needs of residents.\nOn the architectural scale, the intervention embodies an extension. Its spatial characteristics are defined by the structure of the Panelka types, as well as by the existing relations within the various Panelka configurations. The new structure serves both as expansion of the living spaces and as structural support. Translating the original rhythm onto the extension ensures the continuity between existing and new. On the apartment scale, the intervention tailors the interior by introducing an inbuilt support structure to open up the existing layouts. The diversification of the apartment types and the possibility of customisation ensure multiple life cycles. The material circularity and the personalisation of the facade are supported by reusing the concrete of the demolished interior walls to produce various cladding geometries. Furthermore, the connection between private and public is strengthened through the urban concept of interconnected activity pockets. Both on urban and building scale, the design rethinks the existing linear design methodology. Through defining different degrees of participation, the project aims to enhance the collaboration between residents and professionals. \nWhile reusing materials and structures, the proposed framework enables personalization, layout flexibility, façade adaptability, programme circularity, and social sustainability. In doing so, the created ecosystem tackles the negative connotation of Panelka and ensures that once change comes, and it will, Panelka will embrace it.
