Parameters as respect for the environment, need for lasting over time and saving money and time, flexibility and a human-centered design process contributed to planning a partly prefabricated, assembled, provisional housing unit that is, variable, sustainable, autonomous, easily transported and can be adjusted on the shores of the Mediterranean.
I'm curious as to what creative and intellectual potential is arriving on European shores on foot, and as an architect I'm motivated to help unfold it. The short-term crisis turns into a longer-term reality and design could intervene, not only to create infrastructure, services and communities to solve problems, but also to fuel vision. \nThus, the objective of this proposal is to investigate the residence both as a shelter prototype and a part of the construction environment adjusted on the Mediterranean shores either in a rural or an urban area. The design of a vivid, mobile housing unit, which explores and revises the relationship between the human needs and a refuge. The basic target is to design a pleasant interior, taking into account diverse bioclimatic strategies and providing a quality of life that goes beyond satisfying the basic needs. \nThe simplicity of the initial volume, the use of local materials for its harmonious integration to the environment, as well as the standardization and the prefabrication of modules meet the need for emergency hosting of the overwhelming refugee flows, while minimizing the pollution and the construction time. The assembled parts contribute to the overall aesthetics and the objective of the project, while aiming to minimize the volume so as to facilitate the storage, the efficient transportation and the quick and easy construction of the modular homes. The need for flexibility in capacity, given the large size of many families, led to the development of the monoblock as a kit of parts with great expandability, where extra modules can be added in series, depending on the requirements. Because design is not about dealing with consequences but about creating futures.\nRefugees should not be segregated; neither should they feel homeless. On the contrary, they should feel that they are part of the hosting country, having the right to enjoy decent living conditions. This can be achieved by seeking the appropriate architectural manipulations. Design is about people- including refugees.
