Oslo is growing, and with it the demand for public transportation. In order to meet future demands, the municipality of Oslo and the government of Norway wish to expand the metro system in the capital with a new tunnel through the city center. This is my proposal for one of a new metro station.
Olaf Ryes Plass provides the perfect set of parameters for creating a metro station that can link the street level with the underground in a natural and pleasant manner. By working with (and not against) the criterias and regulations of both a metro station and a good urban area I hope to create a station that’s more than just platform for passengers. A station that doesn’t conflict with its surroundings, but enhances them.\nMetro stations are an important part of any major city’s identity, as almost all visitors use them at some point during their stay. Many cities use their metro system and stations as a way to present their city as modern and elegant as possible. Modern metro stations can thus become too preoccupied with impressing tourists that they neglect their main purpose; transporting people from the street to the underground, and vice versa.\nWith focus on the use of light (both natural and artificial), good acoustics and by keeping the station at Olaf Ryes plass clean and simple (but not boring and bland), it not only becomes more effective and better to use for its main users; the everyday commuters. It also establishes a symbiosis with the streetscape; both enriching each other.
