The shifting dynamics of contemporary gender relations and diverse intimate relationships challenge the conventional marriage system, and these new intimate relationship groups attempt to construct their own social space. In China, the term ‘leftover women/men’ generally refers to unmarried people over 27. To ensure their children get married, parents have developed marriage markets. It occupies public park, and the young people tend not to be there, but only parents to display their personal information like advertisements on objects without them even knowing, which is agent socialisation.
The project investigates a new aesthetic mode of space that connects different individuals to explore intimate relationships in a complex urban context. It creates a new spatial atmosphere in an attempt to accommodate the contemporary young generation and allow them to develop and maintain meaningful social bonds beyond the norms. In order to meet the social needs of the contemporary young generation based on new types of intimate relationships, I try to build a relatively hidden and permeable environment to allow citizens: to actively explore physical relationships with others; to create more opportunities to get to know strangers; not only for having sex, but to gain intimate relationships and deepest bonds with other people. Through this proposal, it will attempt to change the mindset around the traditional marriage culture. The aesthetic model of the way people approach others is transformed from cruising culture. Cruising usually describes the quest for sexual encounters in public spaces. Cruising is encouraged by the existence of very specific spatial conditions and architecture that facilitate this behaviour. The darker the better, the restricted visibility, the scale of a room, the dense atmosphere and placement of objects, soft and latex materials, and tight and narrow spaces. These qualities describe my project and enable cruising - the search for like-minded people. A continuing artificial landscape transformed from a natural spectacle - sand dune. Through artificial topography, walkable ground areas are defined by different visibility and create various degrees of privacy on a continuous surface. The project celebrates gender diversity of the contemporary young generation and creates an open yet safe space to explore intimate relations.
