Berlin plans to expand the "New National Gallery" at the Cultural Forum in the heart of the city. It will enable the Nationalgalerie to show its major collection of twentieth-century art in a coherent form at last. The design creates a new venue which interlinks the existing buildings of Mies van der Rohe and Hans Scharoun at this site.
Basically, the site is one of the most problematic places in the centre of the cultural forum in Berlin. Since years there is no solution to fill the empty space. With the decision to expand the National Gallery at this site it opens the great opportunity to finish the cultural forum as a complete works. By arranging the space for the permanent collection below the ground and the varying exhibitions into the roof we span a canopied volume, the new culture forum. The transparency and the hight of this room allows an interlink between the surrounding icons of architecture.
