Cameroon has a rich cultural and artistic heritage that remains underrepresented, due to a lack of institutions to highlight its potential. The National Museum, a colonial-era building, holds historical value but does not fully reflect the country's cultural identity. In this context, the Museum of Arts and Culture of Cameroon (MACC) offers an opportunity for cultural reappropriation, preserving heritage while educating younger generations about their history and fostering a deeper connection to their cultural roots.
The Museum of Arts and Culture of Cameroon (MACC) is a transformative institution dedicated to preserving, exhibiting, and promoting Cameroon’s artistic and cultural heritage. Situated in Bonanjo, a historically colonial district, MACC represents a new urban and cultural identity, using architecture as a tool for decolonization, cultural re-appropriation, and social inclusion. MACC’s mission goes beyond conservation—it seeks to recover and repatriate Cameroonian artefacts taken during the colonial era, provide an authentic narrative of the nation's history, and promote cultural exchange. The museum will protect and showcase both traditional and contemporary art, while serving as an educational hub for students, researchers, and the public. Inspired by traditional African ceramics, MACC features a semi-buried structure shaped like a vase or amphora, built with clay bricks and adorned with triangular motifs reflecting local pottery designs. This fusion of tradition and modernity creates an environment that is both functional and symbolic. The museum includes: Exhibition spaces (permanent and temporary) A library and research center Workshops and educational labs Social spaces, including a café and gardens Cultural and Exhibition Program MACC will offer an immersive journey into Cameroon’s diverse heritage through a permanent exhibition on: Ancient civilizations and royal treasures Traditional masks, sculptures, and textiles Contemporary art bridging past and present Music and dance as pillars of Cameroonian culture By blending heritage preservation with modern innovation, MACC will serve as a cultural beacon, fostering national pride, education, and intercultural dialogue.
