MUSAC - Contemporary Art Museum of Castilla y León

The MUSAC no longer belongs to us. The MUSAC is everyone s, it belongs to everyone... The MUSAC remains aloof from those who claim its ownership, aloof from those who would monopolise its existence, since neither architects, nor builders, nor cultural managers, nor citizens in general are able by their own means to build a reality that belongs to them exclusively. And neither is reality able to build us, exclusively, in its own image. The success of the MUSAC, in the sense of an accidental concurrence between private obsessions and public needs, does not lie in a deliberate conceptual strategy, nor even in meticulous formalisation. Rather, the success of the MUSAC lies in its generous arrangement of multiple scenarios in which human actions may take place and where the traces of these actions may be understood by others. The single aim of the radicalisation of the art centre programme developed in the MUSAC is to make visitors participate actively in past, present or future actions that take place there, by that means reinforcing links and alliances between actions and thought. Comprehension of the MUSAC through its interaction processes attempts to obviate the need for internalist explanations, which look towards the content, and the need for externalist explanations, which direct their gaze towards the context. We have worked on the assumption that the true importance of the MUSAC lies in links, articulations and transformations between objects and ideas, between the material and the immaterial. Consequently, the MUSAC must be understood as an experiment whose only aim is the establishment of a circulatory system of the collective, through the construction of an open space devised to foster links between people and nature, artefacts and events.
