Mnemonic: An Urban Memory Supporter

In Mnemonic, youth media center, young people can participate and produce their own words through the media freely and truly in order to give the mnemonic effect that can keep urban and collective memory alive by collecting memories and creating news in Ankara/Turkey which got Alzheimer’s with construction and demolition processes.

The scientific phenomenon that facilitates the recalling of memories, called mnemonic, is the main element of the project. The aim is to create a field of participation in which youth is turned into a subject through media production that activates the memory of the city and reminds back. Mnemonic breakthroughs and 6 memory processes are examined in this direction: • Living: Individual process including the current life in the city, the cycle of construction and destruction; • Encoding: Collecting and sending urban memories from citizens to the media center by memory gathering units that work by combining various technologies placed at certain points of the city, • Storing: Process of editing, where memories collected from the city are stored as hologramic capsules in server. Publicity is provided in the library under the name of short-term memory in spherical atmosphere with rails and wheels, • Recalling: Education-oriented process where memories in short-term memory are selected, studied and experienced in specified classes and simulation rooms, • Recreating: Process of producing discourse by making use of the power of thinking and producing through all branches of the media, the transformation of the memory learned and digested into media production which located in a raised position on the project area , • Changing: Regaining productions that are passed from short-term memory to long-term memory, to be remembered permanently. In this way, it is aimed to produce discourse and words with the media branches as a result of memory and urban accumulation through the transmission of the youth to the city again. It settles around the public square and includes interactive news archive, drones, publication hall and simulation areas. With this project, young people can produce their own words through the media in order to keep the mnemonic effect on the city, by the innovative approach in which the city can keep its urban and collective memory alive, and in a central area where dynamic and interactive public spaces are concentrated in accordance with the advanced technology by full participation.
