Mango Vinyl Hub. The redevelopment of industrial spaces located in C?sis, Latvia.

Mango Vinyl record company, in collaboration with the C?sis Municpality, is seeking to carry out an ambitious project. It was decided to revive a former industrial territory.

CONCEPT OF THE CREATIVE BLOCK It’s a complex “with the illusion of YESTERDAY” and the adaptability of “TODAY”. Yesterday this was a factor y of metal lids, today it’s an architectural nutshell. The main goal is to adapt to the current situation at maximum, with the respective allusion of yesterday. An imaginary historical line is traced, where certain points represent manufactories, craftsmen’s workshops, off ices, makers’ spaces and spaces of cooperation. However, there is no final full stop on the line, the line circles in a never-ending cycle. FUNCTION The buildings in the complex have been built during different historical periods; there-fore architectural expression is varied, both in the streets and the facade. Random rhythmic of windows, diverse material expression of the buildings in front (an open masonry of clay and silicate, monolith plating, different types of plaster, metal moulded tin-plate etc.) and the current diversity of functions does not add to an architectural unison. In order to create an ingenuously functioning complex, the buildings are divided into two sides, internal and external, and are connected via functions - manufacturing, trade, culture / education. In respect to the surrounding dwelling houses and busy street with traffic nearby, spaces with working functions are designed in the external side of the complex (craftsmen’s workshops, beer brewery, offices, studios and the makers’ space. Manufacturing is an allusion to the primary function of the complex (the former factory of metal lids and foil), which aims at emphasing, not diminishing the industrial process that took place decades ago. All of the industrial functions are visible to the visitor from the exterior of the complex.
