LEFT STREET, LIFE STREET: THE SOCIAL MEANING OF THE STREET ON CHINESE URBAN SPACE

In this paper, through the discussion of the social meaning of the street to the Chinese urban space, to make the new plan and reconstruction of Nanjing Left Street. Based on the research of the painting Along the River During Qingming Festival, to understand the social meaning of the street in the traditional ancient Chinese city.

The project site is located in Pukou District, Nanjing. The site area is about 305'800 square meters. Different from the establishment of a unique architectural atmosphere, I hope that the final presentation of the base can be integrated with the original city in the urban texture.Through the analysis of the reserved buildings on the site, we can see that the building itself is derived from the wooden structure of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and the courtyard form is similar to the Chinese emblem architecture.I retain the courtyard form of the emblem building and form the inner courtyard through the enclosure of the building. At the same time, we use the exterior wall to enclose the front and back yards of the building to meet the needs of leisure activities or parking. Maximum protection of the privacy of the living environment. Maximize the flexibility of living. The building is maintained on one or two floors to ensure the appropriate size of the dwelling and to establish a street scale suitable for walking in a pedestrian-oriented manner.I also keep the emblem building form and use a larger building volume to meet the requirement of internal space and commercial activities in this area. The middle street will form a continuous market, while the alleys interspersed in it will serve as an outdoor work space for the store, an outdoor dining space for the restaurant, and a flexible space for sale.I use vertical division method similar with Guilin case study to divide the function of this area. We take the upper activity platform as a boundary. Under this boundary is the storage space and parking area which are required by commercial activities and residents. Upon this platform is the resident area. This platform could be considered as another continuous street system that is different from the crowded and noisy street market on the ground floor. It is a place for leisure activities for residents. Here, residents can easily reach other part of the community.
