The project consists on the creation of an Architecture School in the historical center of Valencia. The plot is between the historical center and the old river course, now turned to a linear park. Thus, the project tries to shape that limit and propose an urban solution for this area. Moreover, the school represents a dynamic and lively point in the city.
The project is based in three main ideas: The plot is found between the historical city and the old river course, which has been now turned into a large linear park. The project tries to draft that limit and shape the front of the old river. Moreover, it establishes a direct connection between the neighborhood and this green space. The project is placed in a closed block area. In order to adapt the project to this environment, it is proposed the redrawing of the plot boundaries, meeting the existing layouts. A linear volume faces the river front. There is a lack of free spaces in the consolidated neighborhood. Thus, the ground floor of the school becomes an open space for students and citizens. Taking these ideas into account, four interconnected volumes are inserted, in which different learning spaces can be found. Besides, these volumes close the plot boundaries, connecting with the preexisting buildings. Due to their orientation, the classrooms have visuals of the large green space, while the transit passages are facing the interior of the plot. All four volumes are located around the central open space, a little bit sunken, which stands as the meeting and dynamic point of the school.\nFinally, the classrooms volume consists on the repetition of a modular unit. This unit is flexible and contains room for theoretical and practical lessons. In many cases, architecture is also learnt spontaneously and informally in exhibitions, discussions or conferences. In that sense, the school tries to promote these activities.\nThe materials used in this project are briefly three elements: concrete, glass and aluminum. The definition of the façades changes depending on the faced orientation. \nIn conclusion, the project aims to configure a school adapted to the location, which has an upstanding historical legacy; to create spaces that can be shared by students and citizen; and to foster a deep, dynamic, and enriching learning of Architecture.
