The master thesis project unveils the history of Switzerland's first waste incineration plant and propagates its further operation, consisting of the plant functioning as an inner-city thermal source, to which a sport center is added – profiting and creating synergies with ongoing developments on site.
My work - unlike most other theses - propagates the preservation of the existing structure and its further operation. I tried to reveal the structure's value with a wide range of research: \nThe waste incineration plant at Josefstrasse is a piece of Zurich’s pioneering history. From the launch of the municipal waste collection in the early 20th century, the structure continuously transformed over time, both in terms of its function and organizational framework. Adapting to new circumstances and requirements, old sections were removed and new pieces added. It is not the basic structure of the building, but its history, which goes along with the history of modern waste treatment, that makes the plant unique.
