Music

The concert hall, where the musicians meet the public is the heart of the building – for organised and improvised concerts, as a whereabouts and entrance for the musicians. The gates can be opened appropriate to the use and make an open gesture to the public. The structure covering the hall contains a dense organised floor with introverted exercise rooms.

Unlike other European schools, the diploma students at ETH are only able to choose among 3 different 'scales'/tasks with given program and location – similar to a competition. I chose the task with the smallest scale to be able to reach quite a detailed level of design and construction within this short time of developing a project by myself (12 weeks). Also personally, the chosen program and location interested me the most. Different spaces for musicians need very specific qualities with contrasting needs like introverted- and openness, different sizes for single and group practice, where the atmosphere and light play an important part. In my project I focused more on these spacial qualities of the spaces than the acoustic ones – although in reality they might be as important for a house of music.
