The hotel is located in the “Kumairi” architectural reserve in Gyumri, which in turn imposes certain restrictions and requirements on the image of the building. The life of the hotel is organized around the inner courtyard, from where the entrances to the rooms are accessible. A columned corridor runs along the entire perimeter of the courtyard, which aims to shelter the entrances to the rooms and emphasize the geometry of the courtyard. The entire living space of the hotel is enclosed in the inner courtyard and the adjacent garden, into which a branch of the columned corridor extends.
During the design process, we encountered some minor issues. They did not have a major impact on the progress of the project. The main difficulties were related to the city authorities. The client’s assignment to the studio was to develop a conceptual design that would be native to the city, innovative, and attractive to visitors. Sketches were developed, discussions were held in several stages. After the approval of the client and the city council, we received the coveted permission to continue the project. Mutual trust played a very important role during the design process. It was also important to work with the builders, whose enthusiasm gradually grew as the structure approached its completion.
Local building materials were used during construction, for example, black and red tuff and basalt were used for the cladding of the building. Local marble was used in the passage running along the perimeter and connecting to the back, and the floor covering is local basalt slabs. The floor slabs of the restaurant and rooms were imported from Turkey, made by the Karoistambul company. The paints were produced by the Benjamin Moore company. The windows, roof and furniture were produced in Armenia by LMA LLC. A VRF system was used for HVAC, which was implemented by HVAC Group. The same company implemented the water supply and sewage system, the sewage is cleaned through a treatment plant. The engineering systems are accessible and subject to easy maintenance. The construction was carried out by the Akhuryan Koopshin company. Hot water supply is provided by a boiler house with a high-efficiency condensate boiler.
