There is an existing problem regarding dams all around the world. Usually it required a huge effort over the spam of 10 to 20 years to build a large dam and every time this results with massive adjuvant structures that later served no purpose. How do these industrial settings act in today’s context? How to deal with them?
The main idea of the study is how to regenerate the old and abandoned concrete structures, located on both sides of the Dragan Dam, Transylvania, where the formal construction sites can be observed in the natural landscape who claimed the artificial insertions. The two platforms are ruins that have been neglected for over 30 years and for this reason they are dangerous to the public. Despite their random position, the indifference to the natural context and the dangerous aspect, they have been very popular among tourists whom noticed this very important features and use them as observation platforms. The artificial lake attracts thousands of visitors every year even though it is not part of a tourist circuit. The challenge is to introduce a new element: treatment. From an economical point of view, including a health program could support financially the hole investment, while keeping the calmness specific in the area providing relaxation and tranquility to both tourists and patients. The treatment and post treatment center for thyroid problems provides the intimate atmosphere and the calmness that patients with the disorder would require. The isolated southern site with abundant vegetation make a natural restricted access for patients and doctors. Relatives of the patients, as well as former patients and tourists can find accommodation on the opposite side of the dam, where the northern platform is. The historical cable cranes are re-enacted with new cable cars which will provide a sightseeing experience, completed with a tower that offers the possibility to admire the natural landscape and the man-made structure. Even though the platforms are situated 860m apart, they make up for one proposal, which functions like a single building, completing each other. The two platforms, with their two new interventions will represent subtle approaches which interfere on a minimal level with the existing view.
