My work investigates the genius loci of Kazimierz Dolny, developing a methodology to define the identity of a place through spatial analysis, film, and artistic interpretation. The research examines the town’s historical, natural, and social background, using cinematic techniques to capture its general and architectural spirit. A key element is the 'Obyczajność' film essay which portrays the town’s heritage and urban fabric. This approach resulted in the design of a Lapidarium building, seamlessly integrating with the historic landscape.
The research and thesis of my dissertation focus on the spirit of the place, i.e., the genius loci of the town of Kazimierz Dolny and present author’s methodology for determining the identity of a place. A variety of methods have been used to convey the concept of identity, including tools such as a movie and artistic creations. The movie entitled “Obyczajność” (according to the definition in the old Polish language dictionary, the term “obyczajność” stands for morality, decency, dignity, mores recti, honestas) filmed as part of this project is a subjective portrayal of the urban space, the history, and the traditions of the town. The thesis covers a detailed analysis of the location with due regard for its historical, natural and social context. In the analytical part, the approach was aimed at identifying the historic values and to define the typology of local architecture. The described methodology focuses on an objective analysis of the existing space, leading to architecture that is a harmonious add-on to the existing location, all while the context of landscape and materials provide the foundation for the design work. The design part of the dissertation is a Lapidarium building with an exhibition, intended to serve as an architectural museum. The building is to be an example of a model design process that makes an innovative use of filming techniques to analyse the existing space. The concept is to expand the Vistula River Museum by adding a new facility that will house an exhibition of stone artefacts, archaeological elements and matzevah tombstones. The key aspect is the preservation and commemoration of the cultural heritage of Kazimierz Dolny. The idea is to combine the protection and conservation of historic stone elements with providing an educational value.
