The FOLI·E·S are an experimentation. In the footsteps of Henri Lefebvre’s sociology, they aim at addressing social exclusion and urban inhospitality. This method offers a variety of colorful forms and programs to welcome and make visible those we tend to forget or hide.
FOLI·E·S aims to make urban spaces more inclusive and hospitable. The architecture developed here addresses the homeless and the abused in need of assistance as much as the passers-by. The project unfolds on three scales. \nAt the neighborhood level, vividly colored Kiosks dot Strasbourg on a 1x1 kilometer grid. Each provides complementary services: free, gender-neutral amenities for basic needs (toilets, showers, temporary refuge) and public-oriented activities (small businesses, events, information desks, etc.). This association of programs facilitates the overall maintenance of the Kiosks. The frequentation contributes to the safety of the refuges by hiding them in plain sight. Within the premises, a trained team is available to give physical and mental help to those in need, making these structures safe places to live. The colorimetric system reveals the inclusive amenities primary function. Pink signals accessible, gender-neutral public toilets. Orange Kiosks accommodate public showers. Blue indicates a safe shelter and temporary resting space. Hence, the multiplication and animation of the Kiosks allow them to be anonymous and secure, as you need to know the color code to understand it.\nAt the urban scale, FOLI·E·S includes three Solidarity Houses. Located roughly 6 kilometers from one another, these facilities welcome extended stays, special care programs (low-risk drug consumption rooms, emergency housing, food distribution associations, etc.), and a training centre for the teams in charge of the Kiosks. \nLastly, inclusive pieces of urban furniture are spread every 500 meters or so within the public domain. Their bright yellow use the same colorful lexicon as the Kiosks. Benches, shelters and lamp posts allow passers-by to enjoy a break or feel safer in their journey through the city.\nIn a nutshell, The FOLI·E·S are an experiment and a method founded on the conviction that cities are spaces for encounters, mutual support and promenade. They revendicate urban hospitality, promote a more inclusive living environment and give the city back to all its inhabitants.
