I propose a network of modern caravanserais for the refugees across well known travelled routes. These places will offer migrants the opportunity to rest, gather they or if they wish to remain at this place for an extended period. This will be a place for the global citizen.
More than sixty million people worldwide at this moment have had to flee their homes in fear of conflict and persecution. Within every profession there is a fundamental underlying mission that is rooted in some basic human need. Architecture is rooted in the basic human need for shelter, shelter for the individual and for the masses. Refugee camps and many other “temporary” settlements are attempts at doing so with many of these cases become permanent solutions. It is this transition from an event into the firming of an established form, something that provides a more permanent solution, an emergence of order and the tendency to human organization at a large scale that are essential to the future of society.. The problems we are facing are global in nature. They include housing, climate change, water and food shortages and over population. It is impossible to accurately portray the devastating effects that global challenges will have on us all, unless unified global action is taken. Our shared challenges call for global solutions, and these solutions will require cooperation on a global scale unparalleled in human history. With increased connectivity globally, these issues are becoming more and more prevalent. Multitudes of nationalities, ideologies and cultures are currently traversing the globe in search of a secure, prosperous life, one without prejudice or hatred. This mass migration of people is not a new issue to humanity but is one that is constantly repeated throughout history. The cause of this migration is for many different reasons but ultimately they are all striving for the same result no matter of geographical location. This repetitive crisis has been treated as a “temporary issue”, but what if it were to be considered a more permanent one.
