This thesis project represents the completion of my double degree (Politecnico di Torino - Universidade Estadual de Campinas). It intends to propose a new articulation of a former industrial area of the Mooca’s district of San Paolo (Brazil): a reclassification of the ancient complex of buildings of the Sociedade Técnica Bremensis Schimdt Trost.
The thesis starts with the analysis of the Mooca district, aimed at establishing its evolution in terms of historical, cultural and urbanistic context. The organization of the study is based on the crossing between the analysis of bibliographic references, the study of cartography, geomorphology, the urban and the main building typologies plans. The analysis has allowed a good knowledge of the Mooca’s identity. This identity comes to life from two ancient parallel canals (Tamandatuei river, hidden by the canalization operations of the '50s and the SPR railway, built in 1867 to connect coffee industry at the port of Santos, now become an underground line). Today, the result of the research, defines Mooca as a traditional middle-class district of the city, "stronghold" of descendants of Italian emigrants, with an great past made of worker, now threatened by a de-industrialization phenomenon. The floodplain of the Tamanduateí river, seat of the district, it’s dominated by a progressive abandonment of former industrial areas where incumbent of speculation interventions aimed at verticalization of the skyline. The project proposal has a specific purpose: sew up this portion of Mooca at its urban context through an excavation in the memory of this place that highlights the role of river water. This is an active-conservation intervention, a functional reconversion of these buildings protected by the law of cultural heritage protection. This project want to be able to redevelop an abandoned area and to reconnect the community to its territory, through the role played by public space, a place of community and social representation. The new spaces, the hub of recreational and cultural activities, derived from the insertion of new "riverbeds" in the lot, remember the Tamanduateí. The reconciliation of the lot with the railway will be through a new subway station.
