The former textile factory, founded by the Löw-Beer family, located in the center of Brněnec, was a significant economic factor for the region. Through its use as an ark for 1200 jews during World War II by Oskar Schindler, it gained additional historical significance. The factory is situated at the junction of two parts of the village, making it a potential key link for the community. The challenge lies in preserving a historically important site while also recognizing it's role as a vital connector within the local community.
To create a dialogue between past and present, the entire site will be developed as a cohesive quarter, preserving the significance of key buildings. The Schindler Ark and former spinning mill will be preserved as monuments to their histories. Although it may seem contradictory, forgetting is part of remembrance culture. The decay of the Schindler Ark will be preserved to symbolize both forgetting and remembering, revealing visible layers of time. The building, which served as the main structure of the Brünnlitz concentration camp and the Löw-Beer family factory, will be the core of the decentralized museum concept, ensuring an authentic visitor experience. The former spinning mill will be repurposed as a community center, linking the museum to local needs. The structure will be carefully opened up, with three galleries to encourage interaction among locals and visitors, complemented by courtyards for retreat. The Textile Factory Brněnec Museum & Event Location will serve as a central hub for both the museum and community activities, such as rehearsals and performances by the local theater group. An educational campus along the river will foster international exchange through a youth meeting center, and a hostel will accommodate longer stays. To continue the dialogue, the museum will feature exhibitions on current issues. Temporary exhibitions and events will encourage discussions on political, cultural, and social topics. A public park, incorporating the Svitavy River, will offer a space for relaxation, while a Memorial Forest in the northern part will honor the victims of Nazi crimes. This place will offer quiet reflection for the Löw-Beer family, the “Schindler Jews,” their descendants and the local population.
