The objective of the project is to design an architecture that is inspired by the model of the third millennium monastery: an organizational scheme focused on the contribution between people of different ages and on the harmonious combination between the many activities that can be carried out within it. A building for a social community "open" to the context through the use of a replicable plant in different places according to a possible redevelopment logic.
To fulfill all the requests presented in the brief, we thought of a courtyard building composed of multipurpose common areas was thought of. This approach allows a wide degree of functional flexibility to the internal environment and an unconventional implant of the planimetric layout. All the spaces are articulated around an introverted courtyard that dreams of the patios, imagined by Bernard Rudofsky in Domus inks, and integrates active systems for energy efficiency. Private housing is designed through retractable furnishings that make sure to adapt the space to each functional need. In addition, in each accommodation there is a veranda equipped with photovoltaic glass, which is accessed through an inhabited wall, freely inspired by the Milanese domestic environments of Giò Ponti. The exterior of the building is covered in a monochrome white ceramic with a ruby red base, a choice in line with the tradition of the Italian clinker that helps to limit the maintenance of the elevations over time. The roof is a garden that is accessed through a circular ramp that starts from inside the library. Depending on the seasons and uses, the central courtyard and the roof can be set up with multi-purpose furnishings. The outdoor system draws the space through perpendicular paths that end in a wooded area with the presence of an octagonal structure that acts as a meditation area. The building is expandable according to a progressive plan that is divided into three consecutive moments, until the entire lot is filled. Each formal action introduced in the project is aimed at building a space at the service of the internal and external community, in order to extend the impact of contextual redevelopment beyond the limit of the intervention lot.
