Is architecture forgetting about the balance between nature, mind and body? Can we,as architects, aim to integrate these aspects to create an atmosphere, a set of sensory stresses, in which man and nature coexist? Our idea of design is to reconnect mankind and nature to improve our cities and life, focusing on the relationship between inside and outside.
We have been to Seoul in summer 2017 to understand a different reality. Seoul is crowded, strangled messy and chaotic. It is made by a series of little world within a bigger one, you can find an Hanok between tall concrete monsters, a little field surrounded by the streets, the vastness and differences of the city is something we keep thinking about. In the last century the mankind walked away from the biological world, eliminating some internal rules that work towards perfection, beauty and balance. Our human condition is a natural condition, we've been connected to nature for thousands years, a pure habitat that was our home. The aim of the project is to build an atmosphere: this means to design spaces with warmth, intimacy, instinct, sustainability, efficiency, functionality and well-being. The tool to improve the life condition of the community is the relationship between inside and outside. The idea is not to create defined spaces but variable ones, that can be modified by the inhabitants and that change during the year, month and day. The exchange between indoor and outdoor of smells, lights, sounds, visions creates unique and unrepeatable spaces, as a function of the weather and situations. The project is a kit of solutions, with different volumes, shapes and materials, made to improve the old buildings, adding volumes and spaces with light and customizable structures. The kit gives to the community a tool of different spaces, where every inhabitant, human, animal or vegetal, is in harmony with the environment, the main principle on Korean house, Hanok, is based. Other Hanok’s features are implemented in the projects as tools to create atmospheres, as the heating system Ondol and the natural ventilation through the sliding frames. The volumes are different and change according to the typology and materials, from small wood frame to big steel structure. We believe that architecture should focus more on our emotions, how we live and feel the spaces, not only on efficiency and function. Architects have the power to create atmospheres, hidden worlds that can change completely a place, enriching our life.
