The subject is the result of a spontaneous alignment: the non-governmental association ‘Ambulance for Monuments’ aspiring to create a volunteer center was overlaying my search for a meaningful topic; it is also an offshoot from my process of non-academic learning. ‘The volunteers house’ is not classified as a historical monument, but its value lies in its intended future use and in the strong community engagement in its restoration. The house has been abandoned for several years and just after its acquisition by the NGO in 2021, it suffered a roof collapse, demanding urgent intervention.
The strategy tackles two crucial aspects: revitalizing abandoned built patrimony and promoting heritage volunteering through architecture. More precisely, it aims to enliven a household, located in the village of Alțâna, the primary goal being to transform the property into a volunteer center, a cultural and educational hub for the non-governmental association ‘Ambulance for Monuments’. The solution seeks to bring traditional crafts back into the spotlight of contemporary society through the integration of a building dedicated to tools. More than a storage space, this facility serves as a living archive of craftsmanship: for the volunteers engaged in restoring historic structures, tools are extensions of skill and tradition, enabling precise, material-driven interventions. The imagined atmosphere evokes one of a traditional workshop, reflecting the materiality and sensory richness of the craft. By emphasizing the role of tools, the project ensures that traditional building techniques remain actively practiced, valued, and transmitted to future generations. During my last academic year, I actively participated in the interventions on the Volunteers' House in the village of Alțâna during three distinct periods, that offered me a significantly clearer understanding of the context. Additionally, as the most impactful learning experience I have had, contributing to the evolution of the restoration process gave me a deep sense of fulfilment and motivation, inspiring me to invest wholeheartedly in this project. The immersion into the local atmosphere allowed me to grasp certain aspects that would otherwise remain hidden to an outsider, highlighting the importance of direct communication in the preservation of both heritage and community spirit.
