The rapid growth of Mumbai led to an outbreak in density in the low-income neighbourhoods. The proposal creates a system of dwelling clusters that integrate two segregated urban areas to achieve sustainable growth. By creating a cost-effective scheme, the design provides more equal opportunities for newcomers who arrive to start a new life in the city.
Following Kevin Lynch’s theory of ‘imageability’, the proposal creates dwelling clusters that answer to both new developments (West) and urban renewal (East). By adapting to both scenarios, these clusters cater for social, economic and visual integration between the two currently segregated areas.\nThe design addresses issues at several scales. The clusters form public and collective spaces that enable income-generation and social activities, whereas the units are designed to be adapted by dwellers, allowing local patterns of inhabitation to flourish.\nThe high density, scalability, and the use of local materials and techniques make the proposal affordable for dwellers and profitable for developers, permitting as well its replication in other neighbourhoods within Mumbai.
