The project is located next to the recently renovated velodrome and preserves the spatial relationships of the area. The complex includes two indoor pools with associated infrastructure. The roof structure is designed to provide higher ceilings above the pools while also accommodating programmes that do not require direct contact with water. In the second phase, an Olympic outdoor pool is planned. The facility’s partial embedding in the terrain creates amphitheatre-like levels, while its simple, restrained materiality allows it to harmonise with the built and natural surroundings.
The main challenge was to maintain spatial harmony with the existing velodrome and prevent the new facility from becoming a visual dominant. This was achieved by placing the building as low as possible into the terrain, using the slope to create amphitheatre-like levels that separate the entrance, stands, and pool areas. The floating roof connects all spaces and provides a sense of shelter despite the openness of the pool area. Natural light along the perimeter enhances spatial lightness and the connection with the landscape. The complex combines recreational and professional swimming, making it unique in the wider region. The rational distribution of programmes within the roof structure ensures clarity of space and efficient operation, reflecting the project’s focus on balance between architectural restraint and functional performance.
The transformation of the terrain creates a natural foundation for the load-bearing structure. The roof structure is composed of wall beams spanned by steel rods, allowing for large spans with minimal vertical supports. The roof volume accommodates programmes that do not require direct contact with water, while the partially embedded base houses the pools. Skylights and technical spaces are positioned between the beams to ensure both functionality and natural daylight. A simple and restrained material palette is defined by natural timber cladding and locally sourced concrete in various surface finishes. The timber will weather naturally over time, further integrating the building into its surroundings and reducing roof maintenance costs. The only material accent is the warm yellow ceiling beneath the floating roof, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. The reduced façade surface and partial embedding enhance the building’s energy efficiency and sustainability.
