Dujiangyan city, born in the 3rd century B.C and listed in world heritage list, suffered severe damage in 2008 earthquake. Mid-area between protected old city and peripheral disordered new city were damaged then became a void place. By reconstruction of the mid-area, Project focus on connect the break caused by the earthquake between old and new city.
As break between old and new city for the earthquake must be connected by reconstruction of mid-area, continuity between old city and the mid-area need to be considered firstly. Important routes of worship transformed into the main tourist routes, which connect the most famous attraction end at the old city gate on north boundary of the mid-area. Extend these route can easily connect to the old city and create continuously public space along them. Besides, the routes closely relate to landscape for leading directly to the mountain. To avoid the disordered development in the new city, new type of courtyard blocks are set to create the public space with different levels of openness, four different types adopt to various of activities for both tourists and local people. The common courtyard type own great openness to the river, while smaller-courtyard type can be combined to form the street with semi-open courtyards for canting or shopping malls. The type with front yard is able to provide actively and open living conditions for tourists, while the type with back yard supply enough privacy for residents. Vital landscape, the river, with rapid flow for immigration, people are not able to be near it, but its adequate width provide good river view. Since the old city is crowded with tourists, the waterfront space in the site can become great open space. Different scales of infrastructure and leisure facilities can be set on the riverside according to diversity of river bend directions. Therefore, Public activities of different sizes can be set up there, such as coffee seats or Mahjong house or outdoor performance. Besides, a new public square lay by side of both the river and the city gate, to meet the most important junction for new and old City, with city gate, mountain and river view. Upon Continuity with the old city, New type of courtyard blocks and Open space with landscape, blocks in this void, forgotten place will be reconstructed, and sew the old and new city. The new city form not only continue unique landscape of Dujiangyan, but also supply high-quality open space meeting needs of both residents and tourists.
